Healthier Homes Guidelines: Household Cleaning Products
Discover how certain household cleaning products can trigger asthma attacks due to harsh chemicals and strong odors. Learn ways to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals by using nontoxic products, following proper application techniques, and increasing ventilation.

• Regular use of harsh chemicals is as bad as smoking several cigarettes
• Common sources of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) include bleach, ammonia, detergents, rug and upholstery cleaners, aerosol sprays, moth repellents, and air fresheners
• Measure correct proportions when using chemical agents
• Never mix cleaning products or chemicals, especially bleach with ammonia
• Increase ventilation for 24-48 hours after using chemicals by opening windows, using fans, vents, and exhaust fans
• Use HEPA air purifiers to improve air quality
